Being a mom is a huge responsibility – being a single mom takes that to a whole new level. The sad reality is that 1 in 5 single mothers in Canada are raising their children in poverty. And here in our community, the situation isn’t any better. Right now, women from neighbourhoods across our city are struggling to afford the basic costs of living.

Did you know that almost half of all women in our community who are living alone are experiencing poverty and can’t afford the basic costs of living? This means they could be struggling to buy groceries, pay rent or their monthly bills. They could be staying at a homeless shelter. And they could be someone you least suspect – your neighbour, a cashier at your local grocery store or the barista who serves your morning coffee. The faces of poverty are diverse – and they are right here, close to home.

This Easter, share the gift of a meal with a neighbour in need and let them know they are not alone. When you feed someone who is hungry and hurting, you give them hope for a new beginning. A warm Easter meal at a welcoming place like The Mustard Seed is the first step in giving someone who is experiencing homelessness a ray of hope for a better tomorrow.

Most of us are looking forward to the festivities of the Christmas season, but there are those who are not so blessed. Every night there are hundreds of families and individuals in our community struggling to put food on the table or sleeping without a roof over their head.

For those experiencing poverty and homelessness, a warm, nutritious meal can fill a belly and give hope! This Thanksgiving, we are expecting hundreds of guests to join us for a traditional holiday dinner. To prepare this special feast, we need your support.
